T.I. Chastises Media For Connecting Boston Marathon Bombing To Hip Hop
One of the many reports that have come out in the wake of the Boston Marathon Bombing last week was the fact that bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev often visited Real-HipHop.com, even having an email address associated with the website.
While various media outlets have used the connection to infer that Hip Hop may have played a role in Tsarnaev's actions, T.I. dismisses that notion.
"Hip Hop narrates the activity and conditions of our culture," said Tip to TMZ. "It doesn't create them."
"Hip hop ain't never been about hurting innocent people," he continued, adding that the bombing "was a horrible tragedy and my prayers go out to the families involved."
Interestingly, TMZ had reported earlier in the week that Tsarnaev was "heavy into Hip Hop," drawing the very connection that upset T.I. in the first place.
Tamerlan's younger brother Dzhokhar, the other suspect in the bombings, was captured alive on Friday (April 19th).

Rick Ross May Lose Up To $5 Million In Lost Endorsement Deal With Reebok
As previously reported, as a result of petitions and protests from anti-sexism group UltraViolet demanding that Rick Ross be dropped from his endorsement deal with Reebok over date rape lyrics on the song “U.O.E.N.O,” the women’s rights group got their wish, and Reebok has cut all ties with the Miami rapper.
At the time of the initial report, Reebok gave a statement on dropping Ross:
As reported by TMZ, sources close to Rick Ross say the Miami rapper will lose between $3.5 million and $5 million over his lost endorsement deal. The source also noted that Rozay was getting a check each time he wore the shoes.
The source also told the publication that Ross feels bitter and betrayed over the situation, and he believed that he was owed a second chance to represent the Athletic company.
As of press time, neither Reebok nor Rick Ross have addressed the financial terms of their forfeited deal.

Reebok holds our partners to a high standard, and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so. They added: While we do not believe that Rick Ross condones sexual assault, we are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse. Now, new details have come to light revealing that Rick Ross stands to lose up to $5 million from Reebok as a result of being dropped over his date rape lyrics on the song “U.O.E.N.O.”

Jay-Z Relinquishes Ownership Of Brooklyn Nets
Jay-Z writes a letter to announce that his "job as an owner is over" with the NBA's Brooklyn Nets and he explains how he plans to move forward with Roc Nation Sports.
According to Jay-Z, his time as a minority owner of the team was important. As he explained in a letter on his own Life+Times site, he will be "a Brooklyn Net forever."
"Being a member of the Nets organization surpassed some of my greatest ambitions," Jay wrote. "It was never about an investment; it was about the NETS and Brooklyn. My job as an owner is over but as a fan it has just begun. I’m a Brooklyn Net forever. It’s been an honor to work with Mikhail Prokhorov, Dmitry Razumov, Christophe Charlier, ONEXIM Sports and Entertainment, Brett Yormark and all the wonderful people involved in making the Nets first class. My sincerest thanks goes to Bruce Ratner, who first introduced the idea of moving the Nets to Brooklyn. A thank you and deepest appreciation goes to the fans. You are the lifeblood of any team."
Jay-Z went on to explain how this move will impact future plans for Roc Nation Sports. He also explained how this transition "was a tough decision."
"The Nets have made their mark on the NBA and as they enter a new era, Roc Nation does as well; as we embark on Roc Nation Sports," he noted. "Our newest endeavor is committed to building the brands of professional athletes as we have done for some of today’s top music artists. For Roc Nation Sports to function at its full potential, NBA rules stipulate that I relinquish my ownership in the Brooklyn Nets. It was a tough decision but as I stated earlier, it’s not about ownership. Congratulations to The Nets on a great season and making the playoffs! I will always be a Brooklyn Net."
This news confirms some of the reports circulating about Jay-Z dropping his ownership stake with the Brooklyn Nets. The emcee rhymed about said rumors in his "Open Letter" leak, a song that also discussed his recent trip to Cuba. Jay-Z still reportedly owns one-fifth of one percent of the billion-dollar arena the Brooklyn Nets play in, the recently built Barclays Center.

Tyga Claims He Has Never Received A Royalty Check From Cash Money Records
After three albums with Cash Money Records, Tyga told Power 105's The Breakfast Club that all he received was a signing bonus.
"I never got a check from Young Money/Cash Money," Tyga said in the interview, as reported by HipHopBlog.com. "But by me saying that, I've always treated my career like independent and everything that I got is because of myself, my own endorsements, me touring, myself. I think I got a signing bonus when I first signed but that was it."
Artists including Juvenile and Mannie Fresh have previously left Cash Money, citing financial disputes for their departure.
Tyga however, did not appear to be completely complaining, "At a certain time, you get your money but at the same time, they pay for your videos and all that other stuff. But I never really was dependent on the label like that."
Tyga's third solo album, Hotel California is projected to receive a Top 10 debut tomorrow.

Pitbull Raps About Jay-Z's Trip To Cuba In "Open Letter"
Mr. 305, Pitbull, talks about Jay-Z's trip to Cuba with Beyonce and shares his take on Cuban-American relations with his own "Open Letter."
As a Cuban-American, Pitbull used the "Open Letter" instrumental to speak about political issues surrounding the relationship between Cuba and America. He also sent a message to Jay and Beyonce.
"Question of the night, would they have messed with Mr. Carter if he was white?" Pitbull asks on the track. "Happy fifth year anniversary, Jay and Bey. Don’t worry, it’s on me.”
The song comes in response to criticism Jay-Z faced while visiting Cuba with Beyonce. Senator Marco Rubio demanded the president's explanation for the trip. The trip was reportedly licensed through the U.S. Treasury Department.
Pitbull announced the track via his Twitter account and posted a message to fans.

DJ Premier Recalls Friendship With Tupac & Jay-Z's Work Ethic
Gang Starr's DJ Premier says he threw wild parties with Tupac before the fame and describes Jay-Z as a hard worker.
"We knew Pac before he bubbled," the Gang Starr producer explained. "We knew him when he was going through his drama and we remained really close friends."
"We were really there, at their house, throwing wild parties. Before Pac even dropped [1992's] 'Trapped,' we were hanging out with Pac like that," he added.
Premier also recalled an experience where Tupac used the crowd to protest when he did not receive payment for a show. According to Premier, Pac went on stage saying, "Yo, they ain't got my mothafuckin' money and I want y'all to tear this place up right now!"
Premier also shared memories of watching Jay-Z in the studio. He recalled seeing Jay go from a session with Too Short for "A Week Ago" to a session with him for "A Million and One Questions (Remix)," running back and forth between takes.
"His success is well deserved," Premier stated in the interview. "He busts his ass."

Rick Ross Responds To Reebok, Releases Formal Apology Statement
Rick Ross says that his "U.O.E.N.O." lyrics did not reflect his "true heart." He wishes Reebok Classics success moving forward.
"Before I am an artist, I am a father, a son, and a brother to some of the most cherished women in the world. So for me to suggest in any way that harm and violation be brought to a woman is one of my biggest mistakes and regrets. As an artist, one of the most liberating things is being able to paint pictures with my words. But with that comes a great responsibility. And most recently, my choice of words was not only offensive, it does not reflect my true heart. And for this, I apologize. To every woman that has felt the sting of abuse, I apologize. I recognize that as an artist I have a voice and with that, the power of influence. To the young men who listen to my music, please know that using a substance to rob a woman of her right to make a choice is not only a crime, it's wrong and I do not encourage it. To my fans, I also apologize if I have disappointed you. I can only hope that this sparks a healthy dialogue and that I can contribute to it." —William Roberts (a.k.a "Rick Ross")
Additionally, the star went on his Twitter to thank Reebok, wishing the brand further success

Jay-Z's 'Open Letter' Sparks White House Reaction: "The President Did Not Communicate W/ Jay
The White House official also made sure to distance President Obama from the record
Carney dismissed the claim. "It's a song," he said. "The president did not communicate with Jay-Z over this trip." "I am absolutely saying that the White House, from the president on down, had nothing to do with anybody's personal -- anybody's travel to Cuba. That is something that Treasury handles," he said. Jay-Z and Beyonce's trip to Havana was government-sanctioned and allowed through a licensed program that encourages "meaningful contacts" with Cubans. According to the new song, they "turned Havana into Atlanta" with "Guayabera shirts and bandanas," Jay-Z raps. (ABC News)

Rick Ross Dropped By Reebok, Over Perceived Rape Lyric
Following the lyrics of "U.O.E.N.O. (You Ain't Even Know It)," Reebok says that Rick Ross fails to meet the standards and values their brand demands in a partner.
After a public protest in front of their New York City store on April 4, Reebok has dropped star rapper Rick Ross from an endorsement deal. The Washington Post reports that the shoemaker and apparel brand released the following statement today: “Reebok holds our partners to a high standard and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so.”
The reaction is like to an appearance on Rocko's "U.O.E.N.O. (You Ain't Even Know It)." The emcee rapped, "Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it / I took her home and enjoy that, she ain't even know it." Rocko has since removed Ross' verse from his single.
Reebok added that Rick Ross, who apologized in a tweet and during a radio interview, did not act in accordance with their standards, following the allegations. The statement continued, "We are very disappointed [that Rick Ross] has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue.”

J.Cole Wants To Compete With "White Folks" For Album Of The Year Grammy
I’m trying to compete with the white people,” said Roc Nation emcee J. Cole during a recent interview with Hartford’s Hot 93.7. The “Power Trip” rapper was speaking on how he want his upcoming album, Born Sinner, to be a competitor for the Grammy’s coveted “Album of the Year” award and not settling for just picking up trophies in the Hip-Hop categories.
Cole expressed that in his opinion Hip-Hop is still not regarded as highly other
genres of music citing CBS’ decision to not air Drake’s “Rap Album of the Year” win at the this year’s ceremony and the lack of “Album of the Year” winners from the Hip-Hop community.
“I feel like Hip-Hop is little unappreciated,” said Cole. “Not to mention, rappers never win for album of the year. Even Kanye West, who if any rapper deserved it in the past ten years it would be Kanye West with Graduation.”
The Fayetteville, North Carolina native hopes his sophomore LP will put him alongside Lauryn Hill (The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill) and OutKast (Speakerboxxx/The Love Below) as the only Hip-Hop acts to ever win the Album of the Year Grammy.
While his first official single from Born Sinner, “Power Trip”, is moving up the charts, Cole took time during the Q&A to reflect on one track he missed out on being a part of.
“It was the song ‘Burn’ with Meek Mill and Big Sean. I was suppose to be on that,” admitted Cole.
He also revealed that he, Meek, and Sean had discussed doing a joint mixtape. When that project wasn’t able to materialize, the three rappers planned to release one track together, but Cole ultimately did not make it on the record.
While he missed the Meek Mill/Big Sean collabo, Cole reaffirmed that the joint album with Kendrick Lamar is still in the works, and he said his ultimate collaborations would be a song with 2Pac and Nas and one with Jay-Z and Eminem.
Cole clearly has a love for the rappers he grew up listening to, but he also appreciates the new class of emcees as well.
“There’s a lot of good stuff around the corner. Me, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Kendrick, that whole clique, Joey Bada$$… it’s a lot of heat coming.”
J. Cole’s Born Sinner LP is scheduled for release on June 25th.

Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 4/7/2013
Tyler, The Creator's "Wolf" out-sells "Goblin" by close to 50,000 units. Papoose's heavily-delayed "Nacirema Dream" is approaching a benchmark, and Drake's "Take Care" crosses 2 million.
Justin Timberlake and his 20/20 Experience will not budge. For a third straight week, the Tennessee native held the #1 spot, and not cult-followed Tyler, The Creator or even Lil Wayne could move him.
Tyler's Wolf did however grab a Top 5 debut, this project fully on the Odd Future Records imprint. Also on the charts was Papoose, who despite not making last week's HipHopDX charts coverage, is approaching 10,000 units sold on his heavily-delayed Nacirema Dream debut album.
As expected, Drake's Take Care did cross the 2 million milestone. It is now the fourth Young Money Entertainment release to go multi-platinum, following Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III and Tha Carter IV, and Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday debut.
Wolf outsold Goblin's first-week by nearly 50,000 units. That effort also scored the Los Angeles, California native a #5 debut.

Tyler, The Creator Is A Wolf
Tyler, The Creator's second label release, Wolf, sold just under 90,000 first-week units. The Odd Future front-man's latest effort features some higher profile guest-work than 2011's Goblin. Pharrell, Erykah Badu and former OFWGKTA member Casey Veggies all appear, as do the active members, including Frank Ocean. This is Tyler's first release fully with the group's own label, as Goblin was a one-album deal with XL Recordings. Wolf is distributed by Sony Red.Wolf outsold Goblin's first-week by nearly 50,000 units. That effort also scored the Los Angeles, California native a #5 debut.
Papoose's Dream Lives On
Following Papoose's 2006 seven-figure contract with Jive Records, Nacirema Dream began its campaign. Six and a half years later, much of the album as recorded in the mid '00s was released courtesy of Honor B4 Money/Empire Distribution. The Brooklyn, New York emcee and onetime Kool G Rap and DJ Kay Slay protege worked with East Coast Hip Hop luminaries such as DJ Premier and Buckwild, along with Heatmakerz and Dame Grease. Vocally, the album features Mobb Deep, Jadakiss, Jim Jones and Pap's own wife, Remy Ma. One guest who later criticized the album for an authorized appearance is Erykah Badu. The 20-track effort notably features a sequel to Papoose's early 2000s street hit and lyrical clinic, "Alphabetical Slaughter."Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 4/7/2013

This day in HipHop Five Years Ago: 50 Cent "Young Buck Is No Longer In G-Unit"
50 Cent has made it clear about the status of Young Buck, one of his artists who has had a shaky relationship with the company for several months.50 Cent revealed today [April 7] that the Tennessee rapper was no longer in G-Unit the group, but would still record for the label. You can look at it and see thats Game [former G-Unit rapper] all the way. I was giving him a chance, giving him the benefit of the doubt [to remain with the group]. You can take this as an official notice right here pretty much you can say: Young Buck is no longer in the group G-Unit, but signed to G-Unit [Records] as a solo artist, 50 Cent told DJ Envy, a co-host on the Hot 97 Morning Show with Miss Jones. Most recently, Young Buck revealed that he had not collected any royalty income as an artist on G-Unit Records, a subsidiary of Interscope. Those reports were quickly dispelled by Sha Money XL, manager of Young Buck, who said the rapper was waving the G-Unit flag strong. There has been a new rumour going around that 50 Cent has not paid Young Buck any royalties,” Sha Money XL told AllHipHop.com. “I, as Bucks manager and as former President of G-Unit Records, want to make it clear: that is false. Young Buck has cleared over $10 million dollars working under 50 Cents and my guidance.Young Buck, born David Darnell Brown, was expected to appear on Shoot to Kill, the follow up to G-Units 2003 debut album titled Beg For Mercy.Young Buck once was to lead the charge for 50 Cents G-Unit Sout imprint. Instead, the rapper started Cashville Records and signed rap vet C-Bo and The Outlawz, who were a part of Tupacs inner circle of emcees. But has also started David Brown clothing to supplement his rap offerings.50 Cent and The Game initially parted ways, because the Compton upstart wouldn’t assume beefs with Nas and Fat Joe that the rest of G-Unit had declared.
Big Sean Offers Opinion On Kid Cudi Split From G.O.O.D. Music
Big Sean says he and Kid Cudi are still "brothers," and that the two will still collaborate.
With Kid Cudi's sudden departure from G.O.O.D. Music, it's natural that it has become the topic of discussion with his former label-mates.In an interview with Los Angeles' Power 106, Big Sean explained that nothing has changed between him and Cudder. "Cudi isn't just my label-mate, he's one of my good friends," explained Sean. "Yo, Cudi gave me his Jesus piece. The Jesus piece Kanye gave all of us, I lost my Jesus piece messing around, and he gave his. Yo, like that's my brother. Cudi's on my album. Me and him making music together. We still crew, whether it's G.O.O.D. Music or not. That's my dog."
Big Sean revealed that Cudi didn't tell him anything personally. "He ain't tell nobody. I found out about it [when] somebody told me about it, and I saw it on Twitter. ...That's his business. He ain't gotta call everybody and let everybody know what he's doing business-wise. Even though we a fam...that's the homie homie. That's my dog forreal. Cudi's awesome."
"He ain't signed to me. He ain't gotta call me," added Sean.

*During a recent interview with MTV News, Young Money’s Nicki Minaj spoke out as she claimed that she is lyrically better than most male rappers.
Nicki Minaj states while speaking on living up to expectations:
I think I had more pressure during my second album, because I had just sold 2.5 million records worldwide after eight years of a female rapper even having a number one on Billboard. So I had all these things in my head like, “Can I live up to this?” It’s just I felt so bombarded with everything people were expecting. As she continues, Nicki states that she is lyrically better than most male rappers:
This time I care less about the acceptance and more about me being the lyrical, ill bitch that I am. Knowing that I am lyrically better than most of the male rappers out there. Yes, I’m gonna say it. I don’t get the credit that I deserve. Like “Up In Flames” on The Re-Up, if a dude was on that song with me, everyone would have talked about it and they would say “Oh, who had the best verse?’” or “Blah Blah blah.” But when I put a song out by myself…Men run the Hip Hop game, let’s be honest…They not gonna recite a female. They just feel funny and it is what it is. But when I look at my verses, and the wordplay, and the metaphors and all that stuff… I’ve put in my work lyrically.

Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet, who started the petition against Ross gave a statement on the protest:
UltraViolet’s protest of Rick Ross at the Reebok flagship store in NYC will take place today at 2pm EST.
Update: Seemingly after getting word of the protest, Rick Ross took to his Twitter page to apologize for the lyric once again.

In remaining silent, Reebok is using it’s brand to promote rape. Reebok and Rick Ross have crossed a line— not only does Ross brag about drugging and raping a woman, he is pushing the idea that if you don’t use the word ‘rape’ it doesn’t count. We are fed up and disgusted with Reebok, and Thursday we will bring this fight to their front steps. For the protest, women are planning to appear in running attire with marathon style numbering featuring the number 71,763, which is the number of petitions signed up to this point in effort to let Rbk know if they want their business, then drop the rapper from his deal.

Talib Kweli Speaks Out Against Rick Ross' Rape Lyrics
Talib Kweli points out that Rick Ross' apology for the "U.O.E.N.O." perceived rape lyrics "was unacceptable."
On Monday (April 1), Talib Kweli appeared on Huffington Post's HuffPostLive segement with host Marc Lamont Hill. While appearing, the Brooklyn, New York emcee reacted to one of Hip Hop's bigger stories of late: Rick Ross' perceived lyrics condoning rape in the song, "U.O.E.N.O."
"I don't care if Rick Ross is 40 years old—he's a misguided 40-year-old person," said Kweli, who recently collaborated with Ross affiliate Lil Wayne. Kweli was also aware of Ross' apology, submitted late last week, where he said that the lyrics were not referring to rape and that it was "a misunderstanding." "Rick Ross condoned rape in that song ... and he should apologize, and his apology that he offered was unacceptable," said Talib Kweli.
He was joined by Ebony editor Jamilah Lemieux, Washington Post columnist Rahiel Tesfamariam and activist Rosa Clemente.
Within Talib Kweli's catalog, he made the bonus song, "Four Women" on 2000's Train Of Thought album by Reflection Eternal. The Nina Simone-inspired song spoke out was a critical statement on the mistreatment of women.

Lil Wayne's "I Am Not A Human Being II" is baller-blocked by Justin Timberlake's "20/20 Experience." Drake's "Take Care" soars up the charts in chase of two million, and Notorious B.I.G. appears.
As projected, Justin Timberlake did not budge—not even for Lil Wayne, with his 20/20 Experience. The former N*Sync front-man maintained a #1 spot, smashing the million-sold benchmark as easily predicted. One of music's biggest stars and centered around a month-long media blitz concerning his health, Lil Wayne landed comfortably at #2 with I Am Not A Human Being II, the sequel to his late 2010 Rock/Rap experiment. Also making the charts was Strange Music's Punk-inspired duo, Ces Cru. The Kansas City, Missouri natives' first full-length, a self-titled effort, conquered the Top 100. Sixteen years to the month from when he was tragically murdered in Los Angeles, California, one of Hip Hop's lyrical giants, The Notorious B.I.G. also popped back into the Top 200, with Bad Boy Records' Greatest Hits project.
Lil Wayne Says I Am Not A Human Being, Again
I Am Not A Human Being II, Lil Wayne's tenth solo full-length, sold over 200,000 units. That achievement was still over 100,000 units behind Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience, denying Weezy his first #1, since 2010's The Rebirth also came in at #2. This effort did out-sell its I Am Not A Human Being predessor by 100,000 first-week units. However, that 2010 effort was a digital exclusive upon release, with no physical CDs until later.Wayne's latest featured YMCMB's Drake, Gudda Gudda and throwback Boo (of early '00s Cash Money duo Boo & Gotti), however Mr. Carter opened up the personnel to include former lover Trina, Juicy J, Gunplay and even Soulja Boy, among others. This album includes early glimpse "Love Me" and street effort, "Rich As Fuck." The Deluxe Version includes the Young Money & G.O.O.D Music olive-branch effort, "My Homies Still," with Big Sean.
Drake's Take Care Climbs 50 Spots, Nearly Crosses 2 Million Mark
As the rollout for third studio album, Nothing Was The Same is underway, Drake's 2011 sophomore, Take Care continues to tackle the charts. The effort shot up to #75 from #126 the previous week, more than doubling its previous week sales. The Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown flagship release is on the heels of 2 million certified sales. This far exceeds Drake's 2010 debut, Thank Me Later, which crossed the 1.5 million mark, just over a year ago.Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 3/31/2013

J Cole Truly Yours Mixtape: Listen Here (classic)
Classic mixtape, check out that new J cole album coming soon. Check out his new single Power earlier in the blog posted. A future legend rapper!!
Tyler the Creator: Wolf Listen Here/ Review
Odd Future ringleader Tyler, the Creator has a rap persona pitched between shock-riddled misanthropy and confessional reflection; he’s preoccupied with his own press and he uses his music as a vent for anger and frustration. His debut album, Bastard, was filled with sharp darts for rap blogs who wouldn’t post his music, while his sophomore album, Goblin, wanted desparately to prove Odd Future was worth all their sudden hype. In the two years since Goblin’s release, Earl Sweatshirt returned from Samoan exile, Frank Ocean opened up about his sexuality in a heartfelt Tumblr note and released the Grammy Award winning Channel Orange, and Tyler unveiled "Loiter Squad", an absurdist late night sketch comedy show. As a group, Odd Future embarked on a series of tours that connected them with an expanding base of teenagers and outcasts even as they drew fire from LGBT advocates, women’s groups, and a music press none too amused by the macabre content of their lyrics. A lot has changed, and now Tyler returns with Wolf.
Where Goblin felt like an attempt to shoehorn the whole of Odd Future’s nihilist aesthetic into a single album, Wolf pulls back the curtain and reveal the talented introvert behind the music. The first thing to go is the bratty punk fury of earlier material. The insurgent bravado of “Radicals”, “Sandwitches”, and “French” is scaled back, replaced by songs that flip the conventions of his songwriting inside out. The songs about women are earnest where they used to carry murder ballads’ air of ill intent. Drugs come up, but we also hear about a remorseful dealer surveying the havoc he’s caused and a man having a mercilessly terrible time while high. Wolf is still the balancing act between gruff cynicism and juvenilia that we’ve come to expect from Odd Future (especially on “Pigs”, a bleak radio play about exacting revenge on bullies), but these songs are more three-dimensional. Tyler’s more likely to aim for melody instead of menace.
Wolf as a whole also sounds gorgeous, and that even goes for the bruisers. The polyrhythmic hi-hats of the madcap posse cut “Trashwang” eventually give pause to a piano bridge, and the blustery lead single “Domo 23” gets a bump from a boisterous horn section. Foreboding numbers like “Rusty” (a lush reimagining of 1990s RZA production) and the nightmarish, tribal “Cowboy” are declawed by rich textures and melodicism. “Answer” sets Tyler’s longing for his late grandmother and absentee father to a bright guitar figure and shimmering organs. “48”’s crack epidemic reminiscence is adorned with elegant pianos, string stabs, tasteful guitar, and spoken word interludes from Nas. Tyler’s pet sounds are dark melodies hammered out on wonky synths and clattering breakbeats but here they come padded with embellishments that give Wolf a cinematic breadth. The album is pretty, but beguilingly so.
There’s something not quite right, though, and it’s not just Tyler’s gritty basso profundo cutting through every melodic flourish. Pacing is one problem. Wolf reprises the winding sprawl of Goblin, hitting its stride on a series of midtempo cuts on the front and back ends but losing steam on a midsection that places too many of its longest and slowest songs back-to-back. “PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer” marries three unrelated fragments in a manner not unlike Domo Genesis’ Rolling Papers, whose passages of short vignettes gave it an off-the-cuff feel. But the pieces here don’t hang together, and “Bimmer” is too fleeting of a payoff for the uphill trudge it takes to get there. After that, there’s the lengthy “IFHY” (“I fucking hate you,” natch.), a bit of Neptunes worship so adroit that its plinking synths and jazzy chord changes give way to a falsettoed coda from Pharrell himself. (The Stereolab-channeling“Campfire” similarly summons that band’s Laetitia Sadier for a guest vocal.) Later on, the sedate acid jazz of “Treehome95” and the closing comedown “Lone” are inexplicably split up by the shrill M.I.A. send-up “Tamale”. Wolf is full of good songs but in the wrong order.
Still, not all of the depressive sluggishness can be blamed on sequencing. Tyler makes very clear that he doesn’t enjoy the trappings of fame. The album is shot through with harsh words for critics, sheepish venue owners, puritanical parents, and groups who’ve picketed Odd Future shows. But if he’s surrounded by detractors, he only has himself to blame. He was bound to be taken for a ne’er do well by a mainstream public who first spotted him in a video eating a roach and hanging himself, to be read for a homophobe after regaling his records and tweets with offensive slurs. Tyler should know that we don’t get to control the ways our words are interpreted when they leave our mouths to filter out into the universe, and we certainly don’t get to be coarse or crass without blowback. Over the length of the album, the defensive can become grating, and Wolf’s rebuttals are pointless anyhow. By now, you either like Odd Future and have figured out a mental workaround to reconcile their more troubling tendencies with their obvious talent, in which case this stuff is moot, or you don’t, and this acrimonious self-defense is ill-suited to win you over.
With Wolf, Tyler, the Creator displays a radical growth as a producer, composer and arranger, even if, as a rapper, he’s still up to some of the same antics. Still, the album contains a few of the best songs he’s ever written. “48” is a wonder, “Answer” and “Lone” delve into deeply personal matters with poise, and “Rusty” is one of the most arresting lyrical performances on the record if you can see past the self-serving chest-beating. It’s a big screen rendering of the Neptunes-meet-Stevie-Wonder-in-a-microwave quality of Tyler’s earlier works, the sound of a creative mind coming into the possession of the proper means to carry out its ideas. At its best, Wolf manages to make the inroads toward accessibility that Goblin wouldn’t and pulls it off without sacrificing too much of Tyler’s refreshing capriciousness. When the album isn’t busy telling us that we ought to like it more, it’s delivering reasons why we actually should.
